What Does It Mean to be Carbon Neutral or Net Zero?

Being “Carbon Neutral” generally means reducing your current emissions as much as possible and balancing the remainder with certificated renewable energy or emission reduction projects. At Whole Earth Offsets, this involves balancing your Scope 1, Scope 2, and some Scope 3 (waste and business travel) emissions with Renewable Energy Certificates (if desired) and carbon offsets.

Being “Net-zero” means balancing the carbon you emit from your household or business’s operations and any emissions upstream and downstream of your operations with the REC's you purchase and carbon you offset. For a business, this involves balancing all of your Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions with Renewable Energy Certificates (REC's) and carbon offsets.

Scope Definitions

Scope 1 Emissions:

These are direct emissions from sources that are owned or controlled by the company. Examples include emissions from combustion in owned or controlled boilers, furnaces, vehicles, etc

Scope 2 Emissions:

These are indirect emissions from the generation of purchased energy, primarily electricity, used by the company. Even though these emissions occur at the facility where the energy is generated, they are attributed to the company using the energy.

Scope 3 Emissions:

These are all indirect emissions (not included in Scope 2) that occur in the company’s value chain, including both upstream and downstream emissions. This can encompass a wide range of activities such as business travel, procurement, waste disposal, and the use of sold products and services. While indirect, Whole Earth Offsets includes waste disposal and business travel in our carbon-neutral certifications because of the prominence of these activities "within company walls".

Reducing Emissions: Whole Earth Offsets service agents follow up with every subscription with an optional emissions reduction advisory call to assist with renewable energy purchases, access to affordable composting, and other emissions reduction activities.
Offsetting Remaining Emissions: This is the traditionally challenging part that Whole Earth Offsets has set out to make easier. Through our subscription services you can now compensate for any remaining emissions by investing in projects that remove carbon from the atmosphere, like renewable energy initiatives or ozone improvement projects such as those in our standard portfolio.
